Get ready to fire up your appetite at our Big Sunday Barbecue at Kita’s Kota Kinabalu Weekender!

Taking place at the stunning Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort on November 10, the barbecue will marry guest Michelin chefs and Kota Kinabalu’s finest culinary talents for an unforgettable evening of smoky char-grilled deliciousness.

THE CHEFS & MENU

There will be 6 chefs working in 3 teams.  Each team will cook 2 barbecue dishes. Guests get to try all 6 barbecue dishes. 👨🏼‍🍳

The dishes of each chef team are inspired by our airline partner, AirAsia’s, top 3 regional destinations– Manado, Ho Chi Minh City and Kunming. 

🔸 Darren Teoh, 2-Michelin star Dewakan (KL)  x  Oliver Regis Hinson, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru (KK) will serve dishes inspired by Manado, Indonesia, known for bold, spicy, and fresh flavours. Their dishes are:

  • Smoked Skipjack Tuna with Bambangan and Hearts of Palm Sambal
  • Grilled Mung Bean Bread with Seafood Woku Daun
     

🔸 Oliver Truesdale-Jutras, Re:Growth (SG)  and Folia (PNG) x  Ho Jun Yip, Hyatt Centric (KK) will be preparing dishes inspired by Ho Chi Minh CityVietnam, where sweet, spicy, and aromatic elements blend smoothly. Their dishes are:

  • Local Sweet Potato with Kinarut Brie, Nuoc Cham Honey & Ulam Salad
  • Tarap Curd, Vietnam Pepper Meringue, Dried Flower Crumble
 
🔸 Inspired by Kunming in Yunnan, ChinaJohnson Wong, Michelin Young Chef 2024, Restaurant Gēn (PNG)  x  Sidney Disimon Suchart, Hearth (KK) will serve dishes reminiscing of smoky and earthy flavours with herbal, tangy notes. Think:
 
  • Charcoal Grill Beef with Tauhu Bakar, Bridge Noodle Sauce, Pickle Tuhau and Mint Relish
  • Grill Tempeh, Smoked Shredded Chicken with Roasted Eggplant Purée, Daun Kesom and Latok

SUNSETS AT SHANGRI-LA TANJUNG ARU

With doors opening at 5.30 pm, the Big Sunday Barbecue is set to breeze into the evening and one of those legendary Shangri-La Tanjung Aru sunsets. Hosted at the Kinabalu Fields, with panoramic views of the ocean and the stunning backdrop of an iconic Sabah sunset, guests will be surrounded by breathtaking sights, smells and tastes all around. 🌴
